Valentine's day is Monday, friends! It's a great day to show some extra love and a great reason to have a special dinner, night out or night in with the people we are closest with. We want to share a few ideas to get your weekend started in preparation for the special day!

Movies:
A romantic night in watching movies is a great way to spend Valentines day. Some classic choices great for couples are of course Casablanca, Gone With the Wind, or Roman Holiday. For a fun night in with the girls, you could always go for one of our favorites, Vicky Christina Barcelona, or a lighthearted comedy like How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days.

TastyTreats:
We can't think of a better reason to drop the calorie counting and dieting rituals for a night! Appetizers and bite sized snacking foods can add the perfect amount of sweetness to the night. Go for a brie and fruit plate like this recipe or a savory spread on top of a rye toast square like these yummy treats!

Of course the night would never be complete without dessert (the night could easily be ONLY dessert, if you ask us). These cream filled strawberries could be our number one choice, with the classic chocolate covered coming in at a close second. You can of course always stop by your local grocery and pick up a roll of sugar cookie dough, a heart shaped cookie cutter, and you have a festive and delicious snack in minutes!

Cocktails:
We obviously can't forget the most important part! Champagne is a must, and dirty martini's are never a bad idea. For a great dessert drink try the Vixen. Delicious and a great name for a Valentine's day drink!

Think Pink In New Ways

Right now we are thinking pink, and getting inspired to do so in new unexpected ways from Who What Wear's latest editorial Pink About It. Pink doesn't always have to be pretty when mixed the right way with the right pieces. We love how this pretty pastel has been updated by styling with soft grey, ivory and khaki, creating perfect looks that will transition from winter into spring, and all through summer. STYLE INSPIRATIONS Cameron Diaz's laid back, California cool and unstudied look, and Nicole Richie's bohemian elegance. I like simple, classic silhouettes and accessorizing with unexpected color combos via bold jewelry, shoes or handbags.
FAVORITE ADORNMENTS Anything yellow, especially in earrings and/or a handbag, a clear glass ring from Venice, vintage junkboat necklace, and my snakeskin studded cuff worn with layers of wide rhinestone bracelets. I also love throwing in a piece of jewelry accented with a skull & bones motif to mix up the predictability of an ensemble.
STYLE TIPS Brandie's beach chic look is all about layering with both textures and accessories. To achieve a similar look, keep the main piece of your outfit in a neutral color way, and add in bold punches of color with statement accessories. To keep your look from going too over-the-top, make sure that your added adornments color coordinate together.

Polyvore

Some of you may already be aware, but for those of you who aren't, we'd like to share one of the greatest sites for fashion around. It's Polyvore.com. A creative site where you can explore, create, shop, and collect style advice from people all over the country. This site is perfect for everyone across the fashion spectrum, from novice to full on fashion expert, there is something that everyone can take away from going to the site.

Some of the features that make the site so wonderful are the current brands and products that people are loving, hot trends of the moment, style advice, the shop and of course the search bar. In this fantastic search bar you can enter anything that may come to mind that you want to base your outfit on, and pages and pages of related products will appear. Click on anything that is similar to what you have in mind, or maybe already own, and once you click on 'see related looks and items' there will be beautiful collages that you can easily get lost in while finding inspiration and ideas of your own.

Our favorite feature though, has to be the style advice option. If you have a certain item that you are stuck on, or just might need a little something extra that you can't come up with, upload it and send it into style advice and within minutes you will have suggestions in your inbox from fashionable people from all over the globe! Not a bad way to get some style ideas! While you're at it, keep uploading from your own closet, and from online to create looks and collages that you can create, share and constantly draw from while getting dressed.

History Repeating

In honor of his current exhibit that is here at the Norton Museum, we want to share a little bit of the history of Kenneth Jay Lane.
It has been almost 50 years since Kenneth Jay Lane began his career in the costume jewelry business. His career began when he was working for Christian Dior, and Roger Vivier where he designed shoes and sometimes embellished them with baubles he designed. This experimenting and creating led Kenneth to begin his own company. He quickly grew into twenty-two retail shops between the United States, Europe and England.

Kenneth's philosophy was simple. "Elegance, luxury and good taste never go out of style. I believe that every woman has the right to live up to her potential to be glamourous. I try to help her achieve that by creating affordable, beautiful jewelry that enhances her femininity." He achieved this by creating designs that were opulent and beautiful, sometimes more so than some of the fine jewelry designs of the time. One of the most famous pieces he created was the three strand pearl necklace. Worn by both Jacquline Kennedy Onassis and Barbara Bush. A classic look even today. Every woman spanning every generation can appreciate and cherish the designs of Kenneth Jay Lane. Sundancing

The internet is buzzing about all of the new and exciting things coming from Park City Utah this past week at the Sundance Film Festival. Two movies in particular that we can't wait for are Martha Marcy May Marlene starring Elizabeth Olsen and Howl, starring James Franco and Mary Louise Parker.

Martha Marcy May Marlene, directed by Sean Durkin, is the follow up to last year's Cannes award winning short Mary Last Seen. A film that tells a gripping and intense story, as main character Martha has escaped from an abusive cult where she was forced to live as Marcy May. As she tries to transition into upper-middle class America when moving in with her sister, her paranoia grows, and she becomes more and more secluded and ultimately ends up in a complete state of panic from fear she is being hunted by the cult she has escaped. It is being said by critics across the board that this is Elizabeth Olsen's breakout role. She commands the screen and gives a truly stunning performance. This is sure to be a great one.

Howl, directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. Based in 1957 James Franco stars as a young Alan Ginsberg as his American Masterpiece "Howl" is put on trial. The movie is told from three interwoven threads- the life events that form Alan as an artist, societies reaction to the 1957 obscenity trial, and animation that reflects the poems surreal style. The film touches on topics in Alan's life such as falling in love, his mother's mental illness and finding his voice as an artist, all set to the backdrop of America transforming into the nation it has become, and in some cases is still becoming.

Beachside Celebrations

Over the weekend House of Lavande had much to celebrate! We rang in the 100 year anniversary of our island town of Palm Beach and toasted to our amazing founder Tracy Smith's birthday. All while singing, dancing and toasting in true House of Lavande style.
