Jetsetter Destinations: Chicago

This past weekend we made an extremely fun filled trip to Chi town! Filled with food, wine, more food,  and tons of fun, these are some of the highlights from the trip:

Navy Pier: A long walk down the pier in beautiful weather was a great way to spend an afternoon
Girl & The Goat: A gastro pub with a fantastic, contemporary menu. Just make sure you make reservations early!
John Hancock Observatory: A great view of the city, and delicious martinis!
Strolling down Michigan Ave. is a fun way to spend a day as well, stopping in your favorite shops, and restaurants along the way.

A fall trip to Chicago is an absolute must, taking long walks in the gorgeous weather while leaves change is quite a nice change from the palm trees and sunshine here in Florida. Keep an eye out for our next exciting destination in the coming months!

Currently Coveting: Anna Karenina

Another fantastic period piece movie has caught our attention this week! Last week was The Great Gatsby, and now Anna Karenina, the novel from the 1800's is coming to the big screen for a second time. Keira Knightly and Jude Law will be starring, and the film is directed by Joe Wright, who has brought us many other favorites such as Atonement, Pride & Prejudice, and the Soloist.

Channeling the Victorian opulence with details is a must, and very easily accomplished with House of Lavande Vintage. Add in a touch of fur, or feather, and you can easily accent a modern look with a vintage flair.

Mood Board: Baroque Flourishes

17th century-inspired fashion is popping up everywhere. Suprisingly, the baroque print is simple to incorporate into everyday ensembles. You don't need to be royal or Mick Jagger to own the opulent brocades and designs, just swap out an item for some over-the-top jewelry or something more subtle like the well-known Prada Baroque sunglasses. Whether you wear just a pair of earrings, a brooch or a full baroque-print dress, you'll be crowned the reigning queen of style.

Currently Coveting: The Great Gatsby

As you've probably already seen by now, the 1920's are roaring back into style, especially thanks to the announcement that Baz Luhrmann would be remaking the beloved F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby. Runway shows revisited the era with deco-beaded dresses, fringed accessories, and pearls. We've put together some of our favorite items that take inspiration from the 1920's and the beautiful costumes worn by Mia Farrow in the 1974 adaption. (We can't wait to see what they put Carey Mulligan in for the new remake, out in December!)

Merchant Archive Vintage 1920's Tabard Dress: perfect for the start to any 1920's outfit, this loose and beaded dress will have you dancing all night anywhere in the world just like Daisy does in Charleston.

Darling Vintage Brown Fur Stole: Everyone needs a little fur in the life, faux or real. With this vintage fur stole you will feel glamourous and like you came straight out of the '20s.

House of Lavande Vintage Pearl Necklace: The roarin' twenties were all about things swingin' and this tassel pearl necklace will help you do just that. Drape around your neck once or wrap around for part choker style; either way this will add a touch of Daisy to any outfit.

Kate Spade Peacock Lane Kenessa Clutch: Gold with a design of faux feathers, both a major part of fashion in the 1920's. This little but powerful clutch will help carry around all your little trinkets.

House of Lavande Vintage Pearl and Diamante Earrings: Sparkle was all the rage in the Jazz Era and Daisy loved it. Bring out your inner Daisy and make sure your pearl has a little bit of diamante to accent it. These vintage earrings are sure to make a statement on your ears.

Emilio Pucci Raffia and Patent-leather T-bar Pumps: These pumps will finish off your perfect Daisy Buchanan inspired outfit in the chicest way.  Modern yet with a vintage feel, your feet will be getting all the attention in these.

Christy's Hats White Cloche Hat: Perfect for an afternoon brunch or a day at the races, this topper would give any outfit a chic nod to the 1920's.

Iconic Woman Of Style: Ali MacGraw

There are a handful of women from the 60's and 70's that still have a major influence on fashion today, and Ali MacGraw is definitely one of them. Fusing classic prep with boho flare is the signature Ali look. She is most well known for her roles in "Goodbye, Columbus" which won her a Golden Globe as well as "Love Story" which gained her a best actress nomination. Ali began practicing Hatha yoga at age 50, and is credited for bringing popularity to the practice through her video Ali MacGraw Yoga Mind and Body which she recorded with yoga master Erich Shiffman. Ali's classic style still inspires us today, and will for years to come.
Pair classic preppy basics, with an interesting vintage piece, that will add a personal touch to your outfit. This can be a hat, scarf, or belt in an unexpected pattern or color.

Vintage jewelry is key to achieving the 1970's effortlessly glam look. Ali opted for the choker necklace, and sometimes layered with a longer pendant as well. Pieces in silver or gold are easy additions.

And last but certainly not least is taking care of our health and body. Practicing yoga and healthy eating  will ensure a healthy glow from the inside out!

Designer Spotlight: Schreiner

Every girl loves a bit of sparkle and shine and Schreiner jewelry does just that.. sparkle. Created by Henry Schreiner during the 1950's, Schreiner has always been about brilliant stones, unusual settings and extravagant designs. Designing jewelry for Dior as well, Schreiner did not mass produce his pieces which adds to the rare-ness of his designs.

It is said that the inverted stones in his pieces are set with the point of the rhinestone facing up so that it would pick up the color of the garment it was placed against to produce extra sparkle.

Food for Life: Fall Stew

The weather is starting to take a turn for the majority of the world into Fall and Winter and with cold weather comes warm meals. What better meal to make on a chilly evening than beef stew. We found this recipe for Roasted Poblano Beef Stew while browsing on Pinterest and we're pretty excited to try it! (Well, once the weather gets a bit colder in Palm Beach) While the stew takes some time and effort, every bite is worth it. Buy a crusty french baguette to go with and you'll have the perfect dinner. And if you are a vegatarian, try making it without the meat and just all the vegatables, just as good!

Recipe and directions: My Baking Addiction

what you need:

5 poblano peppers
1 boneless beef chuck roast (2.5 to 3 pounds), cut into 1-inch cubes
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
32 ounces beef broth
1 14.5-ounce can of diced tomatoes
1/3 cup minced fresh cilantro
2 teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 large potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes

DIRECTIONS:

1. Broil poblano peppers 4 inches from the heat until skins blister, about 5 minutes. With tongs, rotate peppers a quarter turn. Broil and rotate until all sides are blistered and blackened. Immediately place Poblano peppers in a medium bowl; cover with bowl with plastic wrap and let stand for 20 minutes.
2. Peel off and discard charred skins. Remove the stems and seeds and coarsely chop the peppers.
3. In a Dutch oven, heat oil over medium-high heat, brown beef in batches. Remove beef and keep warm. Reduce heat to medium, in the same pan, saute the onion until tender. Add in the garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
4. Pour in broth; stir in the tomatoes, cilantro, Worcestershire Sauce, chili powder, salt, cumin, red pepper flakes, pepper, Poblanos and beef.
5. Bring the stew to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 1-1/2 hours or until beef is tender. Add potatoes; cook 20-30 minutes longer or until potatoes are tender. Skim fat.

NOTES:

- Instead of canned tomatoes, you can substitute 2 medium fresh tomatoes. Just chop them up and toss them into the pot
- This stew is a little on the soupy side, but you could definitely thicken it up with a little corn starch and cold water. We chose to eat it as is.

Iconic Woman of Style: The Duchess of Cambridge

With her famous locks of hair and impeccable Royal style, it's no wonder many young women look to Kate Middleton as a style icon.

It would be hard to choose just a handful of outfits that we love from the Duchess of Cambridge but we think we've done a good job picking some of out favorite styles we've seen. (And of course we had to put in a photo of Prince William as well!) We had to throw in that very Royal McQueen wedding dress as well as her many looks from designers Temperley, Issa, Jenny Packham and the high street stores like Zara and Reiss and all the outfits in between.

As far as jewelry, the Duchess keeps it simple. Simple bracelets, brooches and earrings. Occasionally she will bring out chandelier earrings (simple in design) for a night on the red carpet.
