Iconic Woman Of Style: Iris Apfel

Iris Apfel. One of the most recognized faces in the world of fashion today, she continues to inspire us with her self confidence and imagination. She brings a fun element of fantasy into a world where it is sometimes lacking. Born in Queens in the 1920's, Iris is a celebrated interior designer who over the years has worked at the White House for nine presidents: Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Reagan and Clinton. Over the past few years her success has reached new heights with jewelry, makeup, handbag and shoe lines. Eric Boman has captured the true essence of Iris in his book Rare Bird of Fashion; an in depth look into the fabric, designers, and elements of what truly sets Iris apart. We are continually inspired and look toward letting our own originality shine through just a little more, when we think of The lovely Mrs. Apfel.

Now through March 11, 2012 the Norton Museum of Art is hosting a fabulous exhibition that explores the cultural dynamic of the cocktail hour. Cocktail Culture features over 150 pieces of art, design and fashion that span everywhere from the 1920's to the present. The collection includes pieces from the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Newark Museum, the Tiffany & Co. Archive, Miottel Museum in California, and private lenders. Cocktail attire from top fashion houses such as Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Lanvin, Yves, Saint Laurent, Norman Norell, Scassi, Valentino, and Pierre Cardin is also on display. Of course one of our favorite parts of the entire exhibition is the vintage accessories! Christmas Goes Gaga

The 5th floor at Barney's has been taken over, and transformed into a fabulous treasure trove of all things Gaga and Christmas! Decked out in Chanel haute couture, Gaga cut the ribbon to officially open her workshop doors last night. The 5,500 square feet of workshop has something for everyone. Looking for a leather, studded jacket for an infant, $50 heart shaped sunglasses, or a $4,000 pair of heel-less Gaga boots? Look no further. You can also find plush toys, funky nail polish and christmas ornaments while satisfying your sweet tooth in the candy shop section! To top it all off, 25% of each sale in store and online will go to The Lady Gaga Born This Way Foundation which focuses on youth empowerment and anti-bullying. So shop away for a good cause while snagging some fantastic, unique gifts for friends and family!

Takin' It To The Streets: Fall Fashion

Seeing some of our favorite trends in action through great street style is one of the most exciting things in the fashion world. Elle has put together a fantastic list of trends and ladies who have executed them flawlessly. Of course being totally jewelry obsessed, we have added in our own suggestions of House of Lavande jewels to compliment a few of the looks!

Hats: Opt for a structured, masculine style and compliment with a girly braid.

Print on Print: Keep the accessories simple, yet interesting. A dangle in a basic brown could add just enough.

Printed maxi dress from spring: Add a blazer for a fall touch (and to stay warm)! A gold collar necklace is a simple addition and can be worn with almost anything.

Leather: You can never go wrong with a great leather jacket. We love this quilted version paired with a great statement necklace.

Blazer: A navy schoolboy blazer adds a playful, yet put together touch to a spring mini. Add a statement ring when a necklace and bracelet may not work. (We love the high heel loafers here as well!)

High Waist Shorts: Elevate your daytime shorts look with a dressier version high on the waist. A graphic wrap bracelet makes for a simple, yet bold addition.

Jeans: Skinny, and in bright colors. One of the simplest fall trends to create a look around! A small addition of a black and gold earring won't compete with other accessories.

Skirts: For those extra cold days, add a pair of tights under a ruffled mini. A silver art deco necklace is a great compliment to grey as well.

Leopard: Not just for accessories, but these shoes were too great not to add. Be bold with animal print in any form this season!

Louis In Paris

There are few things we love more than Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton. This year at fashion week in Paris, he once again stunned (hopefully not for the last time). With a larger than life working carousel that serves as the backdrop for the lady-like, 50's inspired fashions for Spring/Summer of next year, this could be one of our favorite moments from Paris. Kate closed the show, looking as beautiful and angelic as ever in a white feathered baby doll dress and messy bun.

Having been inspired by all of this beauty, we took to the drawers here at HOL and picked out jewels that compliment the look and feel of the show; 50's, pastel, shimmery and fun!

Pan Am, 1960's Style

Being that we are fans of anything vintage and fabulous, the addition of Pan Am to the fall television lineup has us totally psyched! Based around the personal lives of the pilots and flight attendants of the iconic airline, the show is a fantastic period drama that many are comparing to Mad Men. The fashion is of course one of our favorite parts, so keep and eye on the fabulous vintage style elements and be inspired to find ways to incorporate them into your look today!
