Cultural Delights

We always love to share the music, art and creative things that people are doing that we think are worth checking out, so here are a few that we a currently loving!
Steve Martin, Shakespeare in the Park

This Summer, Shakespeare's  "As You Like It" will be presented during Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater from June 5th to June 30th. Why are we telling you this under a picture of Steve Martin playing a banjo you ask? Because this summer's show relocates As You Like It's heroine Rosalind and her Forest of Arden to America in the 1840's, where bluegrass and folk music perfectly define the time. Steve Martin, who is an accomplished banjo player and has recorded two albums with Steep Canyon Rangers, has composed all of the original music for the show, which will be played by a live bluegrass band during the performances!

HAIM
This California based sisterly trio's love of music began at a very young age. Growing up with a singing and guitar playing mother, and a drumming father who started a family band when the girls were in middle school, playing local fairs and charity events. A love for classic rock and old school Americana has developed into an eclectic mix of nineties R&B, Old-school Rock, and nu-folk that is the girls' debut EP Forever. Which is available for a free download on their website.

Cindy Sherman
Recognized as one of the most important and influential artists in contemporary art, Cindy Sherman is a shape shifter in more ways than one. Not only has she donned hundreds of different personas over her 30 year career, she very often serves as her own photographer, model, makeup artist, hairdresser, stylist and wardrobe consultant. Right now at the MOMA a retrospective of her work is on display until June 11th. Showing over 170 photographs, the exhibition highlights Sherman's key series from the mid 70's to the present. Make sure to check it out if you are in NYC!

Miami Made Festival

If you are looking for something to do this weekend in South Florida, make sure to check out the Miami Made Festival, running from March 1st (that's tomorrow if you can believe it!) through Sunday the 4th. This is the festivals fourth year running, and this year's theme sounds particularly intriguing; When The Sun Goes Down is a look at the moves of Miami nightlife, as seen through each artists interpretation. The main focus of the event is to showcase new and up and coming artists from the Miami area. There will be live musical performances featuring some of Miami's best underground musicians, shows that will take you from being the spectator to directly being in the character's life, immersive dance theater, and photography.

The festival will be held at the Carnival Studio Theater, Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts at 1300 Biscayne Blvd; 305-949-6722 .Admission is free, but you can score a VIP pass which guarantees admission to each event for just 35 dollars and read more about each artist performing here!

Ms. Nicks

Inspiring woman of the week, is the one and only Stevie Nicks. A rock and roll legend who is known for her etherial style, as well as being one of the most icon women in music. From the moment she joined Fleetwood Mac in 1974 with her then boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham, she has been consistently  inspiring us with her meaningful lyrics. Her latest solo album was released in 2011, a project she created for herself, expressing the creativity she felt it was time to share. "I don't care if anyone buys it, and I don't care if everyone steals it" She said in an interview. "What I need is to make a record for me, the artist."

Secret Love: The first single off of Stevie's 2011 album In Your Dreams. A song that was written during her first year with Fleetwood Mac, that she never shared with the band.

June Carter Cash

Inspiring woman of the week is Mrs. June Carter Cash. A talented singer, songwriter, guitar player, actress and author who has had several number one hits, toured with Elvis, been married three times, and has had three children. A full life with much of it spent by the side of Johnny Cash, isn't a dull life at all.

A Few Things

Things that are so great, we just have to share!

Jack Peñate, Pull My Heart Away:

Diane Keaton's Memoir:

There is no argument that Diane Keaton is by far one of the coolest kids on the block, right? Well next month we will all have a small glimpse into why this is actually true. Her memoir titled Then Again, will be excerpted in the November issue of Vogue. Seriously can't wait for this!

Baby Zara:

The October look book for Zara Baby has the cutest duds for the mimi me's!

C. Wonder:

The newest addition to Soho shopping is C. Wonder, by Christopher Burch. Preppy, bright, and on site personalization!

Faces Cases:

Always on the lookout for cute and fun(ny) things, this is right up our alley. Great for gift giving as well!

Inspirations

We are always on the lookout for things that inspire us, and of course we love to share what we love, so here are a few places we are currently finding inspiration.

The Anthropologist: A collection of inspiring artists from around the world that bring grand visions to life

Tumblr: A place we can get lost in for hours. We're sure you've heard of Tumblr since it is only becoming more and more popular, but if not, do yourself a favor and start tumbling

ART IN THE STREETS: A collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art,  Los Angeles that brings us a behind the scenes look into the installation of three public murals and the artists that created them.

One Track Mind: We've talked about this wonderful blog before, but it's so great it deserves to be mentioned again. Discover new music daily, from new artists around the globe. You can also rate songs, share with your friends and leave comments!

A Few Things

The Fall season is here and in preparation for more time spent at home with friends and family, it's time to get a few things in order! All while listening to good music, of course!

He's My Brother, She's My Sister- Clackin' Heels. This entire album is fantastic, and we love the look of this video. Everything about this group is super fun.

P.S. Check out this new site for discovering new music and artists: One Track Mind. It's Awesome!

No Carve Pumpkin Decorating- Courtesy of one of our favorite magazines ever- Real Simple. Fun and creative ideas for decorating pumpkins without the huge mess!

Disney is coming out with another Muppet movie this holiday season, and OPI is celebrating with a new line dedicated to them, arriving in November of 2011! We love the range of bold reds, neutrals and fun glitters for the holidays! Also don't forget to check out the fun names OPI has given them. We especially love Gettin' Miss Piggy With it.

Also from Real Simple is this fantastic food and wine pairing guide. A great go- to guide for tastes that will work best together. Even for the wine connoisseur, this is a wonderful place to consult for fresh ideas, and pairings you may have not thought of.

A Few Things

It's That time once again friends! A few things that we are loving, that we just cannot keep to ourselves...

Lykke Li, I Follow Rivers. This is her second single from the album 'Wounded Rhymes'. If we could turn it off, we would.

Remember Shel Silverstein? All of his books are some of our most treasured from childhood. Unfortunately Shel passed away in 1999, but his family is releasing a book of unpublished works titled 'Everything On It'. Can't wait!

Jessica Chastain wearing House of Lavande earrings to the UK premiere of 'The Debt'. She is one of Hollywoods biggest up and coming actresses right now, and we just adore her in HOL!

Mrs. Obama in a House of Lavande belt. To be honest, this isn't even our favorite part about this. Michelle's dress is actually the same Maria Pinto dress she wore back in 2008. A quick hem adjustment and new accessories, and you have an entirely new look. Here's to recycling the wardrobe, Mrs. O!

House of Lavande on Polyvore! That's right fashionistas, we are jumping into the middle of the collaging/styling action. Come on over and join us in getting creative and finding new inspiration!

Inspiring Beauty

She's just 19 years old... one year younger than the decade that inadvertently defines her. The daughter of the one and only Kurt Cobain and the larger than life Courtney Love, is Frances Bean Cobain. She remains off the radar, and for that reason when she modeled (for the second time ever) for photographer Rocky Schenck and these beautiful images were produced, we had a moment. The look in her eyes, the vintage glam look of the tortured beauty, seriously wonderful!

Tory Burch's Playlist For Summer

We here at HOL are loving the second edition Tory Burch Foundation CD that made its debut this past week. A compilation disk of 16 tracks personally chosen by Tory Burch herself, and all proceeds from the CD benefiting the Tory Burch Foundation and the microfinance partner, Accion USA (which works to provide economic opportunities to women and their families in the US) this is a definite must-have and perfect giftable item. A great mix of reggae, upbeat and internationally inspired songs, it will surely make your playlist for summer island hopping and poolside cocktails. We're especially fond of the first track... hello hello, bonjour bonjour, hola hola... the perfect catchy tune to help kick start summer. All we need now is a chic bikini and some HOL jewels to match!
